Biography

Yūsaku Matsuda was a prominent Japanese actor, born in Shimonoseki to a Japanese father and a Zainichi Korean mother. He embarked on his acting career at the age of 23, making his debut as a rookie police officer in the popular 1970s TV detective series, *Taiyō ni hoero!*. This role marked the beginning of a successful television career, with another significant performance in the series *Tantei monogatari*, which further solidified his status in the industry.

Matsuda's contributions to film and television were numerous, with memorable appearances in various productions. His talent was recognized in 1983 when he received the Best Actor award at the 8th Hochi Film Awards for his roles in *Detective Story* and *The Family Game*. He was particularly known for his work in action films, showcasing his physical prowess and charisma.

His international breakthrough came in 1989 with the film *Black Rain*, directed by Ridley Scott and featuring well-known actors like Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia. This role opened new avenues for Matsuda in the global film landscape. Tragically, his promising career was cut short when he succumbed to bladder cancer shortly after filming *Black Rain*. He left behind a legacy in Japanese cinema, survived by his second wife and three young children.
