Biography

June Carryl is a talented playwright and actress hailing from Denver, Colorado. Initially embarking on a path in Political Science at Brown University with aspirations of becoming a lawyer, she ultimately shifted gears, opting to pursue a Ph.D. in English Literature after deciding against taking the LSATs.

Her journey into the world of theater began when she crafted a play for her midterm assignment in a Drama survey course led by the esteemed Paula Vogel, known for her acclaimed works like How I Learned to Drive and The Baltimore Waltz. Impressed by Carryl’s potential, Vogel invited her to join a specialized playwriting class, where Carryl had the opportunity to learn from some of the most distinguished writers in the field. Among her mentors were Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, celebrated for works such as Night Train to Bolina and Anna in the Tropics, and the late John C. Russell, recognized for his play Stupid Kids. Additionally, she had the privilege of engaging with guest artists like Aisha Rahman and Anna Deavere Smith, further enriching her artistic development. Carryl’s diverse experiences and education have significantly shaped her contributions to the theater landscape, marking her as a noteworthy voice in contemporary playwriting.
