Graham Weir, a troubled schoolteacher battling alcoholism and haunted by his refusal to enlist in World War II, faces disdain from nearly everyone, including his resentful wife, Anna. His life takes a turn when Shirley Taylor, an attractive student, develops feelings for him. While initially flattered by her affection, Weir ultimately rebuffs her advances.
