Buddy Visalo, a blue-collar dreamer whose crooning ambitions fizzled long ago, keeps chasing get-rich-quick schemes. His latest gamble: buying a two-family house with his wife, Estelle, and turning the ground floor into a bar where he can finally shine. But the deal comes with baggage—upstairs tenants Mary, a pregnant Irish newcomer, and her abusive, alcoholic husband, Jim. When Buddy’s Italian crew gets tangled in their chaos, Mary goes into labor.
