In 1989 Leipzig, Margarethe, a defiant punk who clashes with East German authority, finds herself locked inside a psychiatric ward. Her sole obsession is escaping to reunite with her lover, the punk musician Heinrich. Even as the socialist state begins to crumble, the Stasi’s watchful eyes tighten their grip, making every whispered plan and desperate move more perilous than before.
